乐队历程

起源与《Holy Diver》（1982–1983）

1982年，由于对黑色安息日现场专辑《Live Evil》混音意见不合，罗尼·詹姆斯·迪奥和维尼·阿皮斯离队。同年10月，他们在美国组建了Dio乐队，最初成员还包括吉他手杰克 E·李和贝斯手吉米·贝恩（Jimmy Bain）。仅一个月后，李被维维安·坎贝尔取代。1983年5月，乐队发行了首张专辑《Holy Diver》，其中《Rainbow in the Dark》和《Holy Diver》两首单曲因MTV推介而流行。迪奥和贝恩在录音室中兼任键盘，现场表演则由新成员克劳德·施内尔（Claude Schnell）担任键盘手。

《The Last in Line》至《Dream Evil》（1984–1989）

乐队添加了键盘手施内尔后，于1984年7月2日发行第二张专辑《The Last in Line》，1985年8月13日发行第三张专辑《Sacred Heart》。1985年，Dio、坎贝尔和贝恩为“援助金属”（Hear ‘n Aid）慈善项目创作歌曲《Stars》。随后坎贝尔因与迪奥不和被解雇，后加入了Whitesnake。1986年现场EP《Intermission》收录了坎贝尔在内的现场曲目及介绍新吉他手克雷格·戈尔迪的录音室新曲《Time To Burn》。1987年7月21日，第四张专辑《Dream Evil》发行。其后戈尔迪因个人发展离队。1989年6月，18岁的罗文·罗伯逊成为新吉他手；同年，施内尔、贝恩和阿皮斯也相继离队。

变动（1990–1999）

施内尔、贝恩和阿皮斯分别由延斯·约翰松（Jens Johansson）、泰迪·库克（Teddy Cook）和前AC/DC鼓手西蒙·赖特（Simon Wright）取代。新阵容于1990年发行专辑《Lock Up the Wolves》。巡演期间，迪奥与前黑色安息日成员吉泽尔·巴特勒（Geezer Butler）偶遇，促成短暂的黑色安息日重组，录制了专辑《Dehumanizer》。之后迪奥重组乐队，仅保留阿皮斯。1993年初，加入吉他手特雷西 G、键盘手斯科特·沃伦（Scott Warren）和贝斯手杰夫·皮尔森（Jeff Pilson）。这一时期乐队放弃奇幻题材，转向现实主题。部分歌迷认为这一阶段的专辑（《Strange Highways》、《Angry Machines》及现场专辑《Inferno: Last in Live》）是Dio最差的作品，也有人认为这是与80年代老旧风格的突破。因《Angry Machines》销量不佳，管理层要求回归早期风格，特雷西 G离队，戈尔迪回归，阿皮斯亦再次离队。

回归（2000–2004）

戈尔迪回归后，2000年发行第八张专辑《Magica》，被认为是“回归之作”，登上Billboard独立榜第13位。此专辑除戈尔迪外，还迎来西蒙·赖特和吉米·贝恩回归。现场巡演欧洲站贝斯手由查克·加里克（Chuck Garric）担任。斯科特·沃伦继续担任键盘手，录音时迪奥和贝恩也参与了键盘合成。《Magica》是一张概念专辑，风格回归早期经典，同时融入更多现代键盘元素。
巡演期间，戈尔迪因家庭原因与其他成员产生矛盾，于2002年1月离队，由道格·奥尔德里奇接任。奥尔德里奇参与了第九张专辑《Killing the Dragon》（2002年），该专辑主要由迪奥和贝恩创作，受金属圈好评，进入Billboard 200榜单。奥尔德里奇于2003年4月离队，加入Whitesnake，戈尔迪再次回归。随后贝恩也离队。

《Master of the Moon》和解散（2004–2010）

2004年8月30日，Dio在欧洲发行第十张专辑《Master of the Moon》，美国发行时间为9月7日。专辑录音期间贝斯由多才多艺的杰夫·皮尔森担任，因其与Foreigner乐队有约在身，巡演时由鲁迪·萨佐（Rudy Sarzo）接替。
2005年，发行现场专辑《Evil or Divine – Live in New York City》，与2003年DVD内容相同。乐队随后在南美、日本、欧洲、俄罗斯等地巡演。秋季巡演名为“An Evening With Dio”，包括常规曲目和一整张《Holy Diver》演出。伦敦场次发行了DVD和双CD《Holy Diver – Live》（2006年）。
2007年，黑色安息日以Heaven & Hell为名与迪奥重聚，2009年发行专辑《The Devil You Know》。Dio因参与Heaven & Hell，推迟了原定于《Master of the Moon》之后的《Magica II》录制。2008年短暂在欧洲进行十场迷你巡演，原定2009年底至2010年初进行22场欧洲巡演，由道格·奥尔德里奇代替戈尔迪弹吉他，期间乐队计划发行新单曲《Electra》。

罗尼·詹姆斯·迪奥去世

2010年5月16日，迪奥在美国德克萨斯州休斯顿因胃癌去世，享年67岁。
2010年11月9日，发行了追悼现场专辑《Dio at Donington UK: Live 1983 & 1987》，收录1983和1987年“怪兽摇滚”音乐节演出，包含Dio时代的Rainbow和黑色安息日曲目。
吉他手克雷格·戈尔迪曾表示：“罗尼去世前，我们正在为新专辑创作，还几乎完成了一首歌。温迪计划再版《Magica》，并收录这首新曲。”该歌词写于迪奥抗癌期间，“非常感人，令人哽咽。”
2011年3月18日，Dio最后阵容成员与前Judas Priest主唱Tim “Ripper” Owens组建了DIO Disciples，开始全球巡演。
2012年5月，前吉他手维维安·坎贝尔宣布拟与原始阵容重组（包括阿皮斯、贝恩、施内尔），主唱由Andrew Freeman担任，乐队名为Last in Line。

Murray（吉祥物）

Murray是Dio乐队的恶魔形象吉祥物，出现在《Holy Diver》、《The Last in Line》、《Dream Evil》等多张专辑和单曲/合辑封面，也曾出现在现场舞台布景。
《Holy Diver》（1983）：首次出现在专辑封面，看似恶魔折磨神父，但迪奥曾说“谁才是真正的怪物并不一定明确”。
《The Last in Line》：Murray巨型形象出现在复活灵魂面前。
《Dream Evil》：Murray最后一次以原始形象出现，出现在小孩卧室窗外，被各种怪物环绕，对应专辑概念“夜晚与黑暗的恐惧与迷信”。

影响力

喜剧摇滚二人组Tenacious D在首张专辑中以《Dio》致敬并调侃Dio已“太老”，并自称将继承“重金属大师”之位。主唱Jack Black常在现场表示，Dio在黑色安息日的表现启发他走上金属之路。二人曾出现在Dio歌曲《Push》MV中，Dio本人也参与了Tenacious D电影《命运之挑》。
Netflix剧集《怪奇物语》中角色Eddie Munson穿的Dio补丁，来源于迪奥遗孀提供的T恤。
1989年任天堂FC游戏《Holy Diver》以Dio同名歌曲命名，主角形象参考乐队成员，虽未获官方授权。
漫画《JOJO的奇妙冒险》反派“Dio Brando”即以乐队命名，同时也是“神”之意，呼应角色自大性格。
